Absurd Reddish

When the absurd returns—spinning in perfect circles—
it becomes hard to believe what we see.
The same lies, the same intentions
remain unscathed, untouchable.

My work stems from an old poster,
an echo of Soviet propaganda:
the 1930s, which we believed to be far behind us,
but whose shadow still lingers.

Reinterpreting that distorted and deceitful image of the past
can help us confront the falsehoods of the present:
realities silenced
to avoid self-criticism of the human condition,
to repeat mantras with a double edge.

This time, however, I sought to deform all those
originally portrayed in a pleasing way—
and to give voice to the feeling carried by the victims.
Finding the lie in the original message
only became possible once I understood
the ongoing nature of similar falsehoods,
those that still govern our consciences.

One sentence—“this is not red”—denies what is plainly visible,
despite the underlying consensus
on the life that this color breathes into the countryside.
