The fifth archetype is a bitter, cynical individual, whose relentless despair has left him incapable of improving his own mood. The damage he has endured is so profound that the rest of his life is destined to be bleak. His persistent pain can only be momentarily eased by causing suffering or taking pleasure in the misfortune of others. The mire in which he now dwells has become his norm, and over time, it may either remain contained or, if fate permits, spread to others. Those who become entangled in it will either manage to push forward, as he does, or be swallowed by the mud.
